Updated COVID-19 Mitigation Strategies and Protocols

August 25, 2021

Please see the updated COVID-19 mitigation strategies and protocols below. These strategies were updated to meet the guidelines of the current mandates and guidance from Governor Beshear, the Kentucky Board of Education, and the local health department. Please note, the information below is subject to change. We appreciate your flexibility, understanding, and confidence. We are looking forward to seeing our BCPS students tomorrow, Thursday, August 26, 2021.

Mitigation Strategies

  • Vaccination for all students age 12 and above is highly encouraged. BCPS will continue to host vaccine clinics throughout the school year.
  • Face coverings on school buses are required to meet federal guidelines.
  • While inside buildings, face coverings for students, staff and visitors are required, regardless of vaccination status. Students may have mask breaks when eating, participating in aerobic exercise, and when they are outside.
  • Spacing of 3 feet for students will occur whenever possible.
  • High touch surfaces will be cleaned frequently throughout the day. Disinfection tools will be used to maintain a sanitary and safe environment. Sanitizing will occur periodically throughout the school day and on buses.
  • Signage will be used throughout the school buildings as reminders for students to properly distance.
  • Staff will remind and require students to wash their hands throughout the school day.
  • A Health Services Assistant will be available in each school. BCPS will have four full-time nurses throughout the district. The KDMC Nurse Practitioner will be available for appointments at the school for those who have returned permission forms.
  • Students are encouraged to bring their own water bottles for drinking. BCPS will also have water available for refills or for those who do not bring a water bottle.
  • Outdoor learning spaces and lunches will be encouraged whenever possible.

Exposure Protocols

  • Students and staff, who are vaccinated, will not be required to quarantine unless they begin to show symptoms of COVID-19. Testing is recommended 3-5 days from exposure, even if asymptomatic.
  • Students and staff, who are not vaccinated and exposed to COVID-19, will follow the same protocols from spring, including quarantine and remote learning.
  • Exception: In the PreK-12 indoor classroom setting, the close contact definition excludes students who are at least 3 feet away from an infected student if both students were engaged in consistent and correct use of masks and other K-12 prevention strategies were in place. This exception does not apply to teachers, staff, or other adults in the indoor classroom setting. Unvaccinated students, teachers, or staff identified as close contacts will be instructed to quarantine regardless of whether the exposure occurred within or outside of school.
  • If a student tests positive for COVID-19, they must follow all protocols given by the health department/physician.
  • Students in quarantine or recovering from COVID-19 at home will work in the Seesaw platform or Google Classroom (depending on their grade level) to prevent learning loss.
  • The Boyd County Health Department will have the final say in all quarantine situations.
