Instructional Placement Change Request

Dear Boyd County Families,

As you know, our second semester of school is approaching.  At the beginning of the school year, we informed you that there would be an opportunity to request a change in instructional placement (virtual academy versus traditional learning) for your child just before the second semester began.  We are now allowing families to make those change requests.  Please note that if you do NOT wish to change your child’s instructional placement, you do not need to fill out the form linked in the next paragraph.  The form is only needed if you want to change your child’s current placement. 

If you would like to change your child’s current instructional placement, either virtual academy or traditional/NTI, you can begin doing so by filling out the electronic document attached to this link:  https://forms.gle/XfRkXpgW2Syw3kzt6All changes must be requested by the end of the day on Wednesday, January 20, 2021.  Please fill out form for each child in your household.  These changes will remain in place for the second semester. 

Please consider the following when deciding to change your child’s learning placement:

  • By choosing the traditional option, you understand that if school is unable to take place in person, your child will be participating in NTI (non-traditional instruction).  Instruction takes place through avenues such as Google Classroom, Google Meet, SEESAW, etc.  This change will begin on Monday, February 1, 2021. 
  • By choosing the virtual academy option, you understand that working in the platform is self-paced, which means students can work on assignments at any time during the week.  HOWEVER, based on timelines in the programs, they must complete all weekly assignments as outlined or will be counted as not participating.  Non-participation may result in your child being identified as truant and will have an impact on grades.  In addition, the virtual academy option requires extra engagement from the parent/guardian.  The content is delivered through the platforms, which means students do not typically interact daily with their teachers.  Their teachers monitor progress in the platform, grade work, and assist with technology support.  At the elementary level, the parent is considered the “learning guide” and will receive “teaching notes” through the Calvert platform.  These platforms are not set up like supplemental programs or online games that students can work through without parent assistance.  Parents need to be available to work with students on the content and should have a fairly good comfort level with technology.  Remember, if you do not have internet access, you cannot choose this optionThis change will begin on Monday, February 1, 2021.  However, due to the nature of how assignments are loaded into the platforms, your child may not have access to assignments until Tuesday or Wednesday of that week. 

In closing, please do not contact your child’s school to request the change.  We need all requests to come through the Google Form.  Thank you for your cooperation.
