Tix to KY Speedway Entice Food Feud Donations

KY Speedway donates tickets as an incentive to bring in more canned goods during the annual Food Feud.

A visit from a university representative turned into an opportunity to help a local charity.

A representative of the University of Northwester Ohio (UNOH), Mike Koth, spoke to the students at Boyd County Career and Technical Education Center (BCCTEC) on September 12, 2013.

Mr. Jack Kinner, auto technology instructor at BCCTEC, said that Mr. Koth spoke with his students about Automotive and Diesel Technology, Alternative Fuel Systems and High Performance.

“I currently have a former student, Ryan Damron, at UNOH working on his four-year degree in Auto, Diesel, High Performance, and Alternative Fuels,” said Kinner.

As a post secondary partner with the BCCTEC Auto Tech program, UNOH is a technical and business university which offers certificates of completion, two-year, four-year, and advanced degrees. The subjects offered are as diverse as the school itself.

Mr. Koth spoke with BCCTEC’s Auto Technology class and brought eight tickets with him to attend the Kentucky Speedway, located in Sparta, Kentucky. Four tickets were for the race event on September 20th and four were for September 21st.

“UNOH has a vested interest in the races because they have a racecar entered in the event,” Kinner explained.

An Americorps worker at BCCTEC, Katie Murray, suggested to Kinner that the Speedway tickets be used as a prize for donating the most food or money to the Food Feud. The Food Feud is an annual event pitting Ashland Independent schools against the Boyd County Public Schools District to see who can collect the most for the charity organization River Cities Harvest.

In just three days, BCCTEC students brought in 222 cans of food.

Murray, who also acted as the Food Feud coordinator for BCCTEC, presented the winners with their Speedway tickets on September 19th. Robbie Shaffer donated 160 cans and had first choice at which day to attend the racing event. Austin Hester donated 28 cans to win the second set of tickets
