Ky. Farm Bureau distributes books to all 4th grade students

Tuesday, March 15th was National Ag Day and it was a fitting day for our local Boyd County Farm Bureau representatives to distribute free books to all 4th grade elementary students in Boyd County.

In recognition of National Ag Day and the Kentucky Ag Literacy Week, Boyd County Farm Bureau chose Jesse Stuart's children's book Old Ben because of the author's ties to our area. Stuart wrote several books, short stories, novels and poetry set in our central Appalachia region and was named Kentucky poet laureate in 1954. He is well-known for his works depicting the rural beauty of our surrounding counties.

Summit Elementary students got to meet with Boyd County Farm Bureau's President, David Horn, Director John Campbell, member Earl Hardeman and Office Secretary Linda Hardeman as they handed out books.

"We really want them to know where their food comes from and how important agriculture is to our lives," said David Horn. "Many students don't realize the impact farming has on everything. That's why we wanted to do this - and hopefully other local organizations will want to do the same thing."

The American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture is the organization behind the week-long agricultural emphasis. The goal of the Foundation is to reconnect the American public with the people who grow their food. They accomplish this through education and supporting book distributions like the one at Boyd County Schools.

Boyd County Farm Bureau gave out 252 books in our schools. But, their kindness didn't stop there. They also are giving away books to all 4th grade students in Ashland Independent, Fairview Independent, Holy Family and Rose Hill Christian schools. In total, they have distributed 615 books.
