Daily Class Activities
We begin each morning with a review/practice activity, followed by a morning meeting where we discuss the date, days of school, seasons, weather and our goals for the day.
A class snack provided by parents will be served each morning (around 9:00 am) before morning movement. Our first and second graders can get hungry at this time of the day.
After morning work and morning meeting we begin our whole group reading and phonics lessons. We practice letter sounds, spellings, reading and language arts skills.
Following whole group reading instruction, we will complete our reading block. Students will complete daily 5 reading centers. Students will be assigned reading stories, these stories are read as a group, as well as being assigned for homework.
Each day students are given time to take AR tests. Please, encourage your child to read for at least 20 minutes per day, aside from their regular reading homework. AR reading allows them to read books they have a deeper interest in.
Lunch and recess follows reading each day.
Before and after lunch and recess block we complete our math lesson for the day. Each lesson is taught with either an interactive video, hands on group activities, and/or independent practice. Each lesson will be followed with a quick check/exit ticket formative assessment.
Our class has a special class each day after math activities.
( Art, Library, P.E., Music or Writing)
Each afternoon we finish up the day with either science or social studies. We enjoy reading Scholastic News to enhance our nonfiction readings in science.
