Reading and Writing

View Events/Assignments for
Reading class is from 8-9 every morning.  We will be reading out of our reading books, as well as chapter books daily. Reading is a major part of our everyday lives and it is important to read with your child as often as possible.  The goals for this year are to increase comprehension and fluency. Practice, practice, practice!

This is also the time that we practice spelling.  We will have weekly spelling list and daily homework.  We also play a game in class each day to practice our words.  I love having Super Spellers!  I will post the weekly spelling words in the assignment section each week in case a student forgets his or planner or list.
  • Poetry
The students will become poets this month! We will be learning about poetry and will writing several poems.
  • Literature Circles
The students will be reading some stories in class together, but they will also be reading different chapter books in literature circles, according to their common interests.
  • Mr.Popper's Penguins
We have just finished reading Mr.Popper's Penguins. The students really enjoyed this book that was written many years ago. We have been watching the movie and will be comparing and contrasting the movie, mostly contrasting!
  • Bud, Not Buddy
This book has been an excellent companion book to Dave at Night. The main character is in an orphanage like Dave. We had the privilege of meeting and speaking with some girls from Guatemala who live in an orphanage there. The students were very interested in what the girls had to say about their experiences. We will not actually finish this book until after Christmas break.
