Artist Maggie Kinnel Raises Money for Build Ashland - WCHS-TV video

To 14-year-old Maggie Kinnel Ashland is the picture perfect town. The Boyd County High School student had nothing but good things to say about the community that raised her.

"Ashland is such a great place to be," Maggie Kinnel said. "We have so many great things going on here."

Kinnel said she wishes many others would take notice of what the Ashland area has to offer.

"I want people to want to live here. There is a lot of negativity in my area right now. People seem to want to keep moving away. I wanted to start reminding people of the good things about living here."

Kinnel decided to do what she knows best. The lifelong artist started painting her favorite scenes across the city. She decided to start selling the prints to raise money to help her community. After getting to know the volunteers in the local non-profit Build Ashland she knew it was the perfect group to donate to.

"I knew I could find a find a way to benefit my community by doing what I love," Kinnel said. "If you paint it is a better way to get your message across. It's different than verbal communication. People can understand what you are trying to say."

The local art has been an area hit raising more than $600 for Build Ashland. The organization works all year on projects to spread kindness and bring community members together. The group will use the funds to continue their local projects.

Kinnel said she hopes her work will inspire other young people to get more involved in their hometown.

"Our generation will be the ones living here in the coming years. If we get involved now it will help us become a better and more welcoming place for the future."

Maggie Kinnel's Ashland prints cost $5. To support her art visit her Etsy shop.
