Instead of spending their Saturday shopping for holiday gifts, seventeen-year-olds' Emma Hunley and Hannah Hupp spent November 25th collecting money for he Salvation Army. They set up outside Ashland's Kroger's and J.C. Penney's while other volunteers worked either one, two or four hour shifts at other locations.

Hunley and Hupp not only dedicated a day to volunteering; they mobilized 51 others in order to fill 6 of 8 bell-ringing locations around Ashland and Russell stores. This all happened on the Saturday immediately following "black Friday".

Bill Burch, a member of Ashland's Breakfast Kiwanis Club and the Advisor for the Boyd County Branch of the Kentucky Youth Council on Volunteer and Service, was instrumental in helping the two high-schoolers get onboard with the volunteer service at the Salvation Army.

Hunley and Huff, juniors at Boyd County High, are members of many clubs and, like many of their friends who are also involved in these clubs, needed a way to come up with their required volunteer service hours.

Both Hunley and Huff said many students volunteered to fill slots at bell-ringing locations on Saturday to fulfill club-related volunteer service hours. To fill all the vacancies, the two students also called upon family, church, and Key Club members from Rose Hill High School as well as members of the Ashland Breakfast Kiwanis to volunteer.
