Catlettsburg Elementary helps decorate outdoor trees

The Students of Catlettsburg give the town a dash of Christmas

CATLETTSBURG:  Students from Catlettsburg Elementary School gathered in the middle of their small town on Tuesday to spread some Christmas spirit.

Catlettsburg Elementary School students decorated two trees in downtown Catlettsburg on Tuesday.

Each grade, from pre-school to fifth, took turns adorning two outdoor trees with handmade ornaments flashing their school colors of black, white and orange. Santa Claus also made an appearance for the children to meet with.

Principal Marci Prater said the school was contacted by the Catlettsburg Leadership Community Development Council to participate in the town’s decorating process — a first for CES.

The club wanted the students to feel like they also have ownership of the town, according to Jenny Caperton, a member of the council.

“We just want them to have pride in their hometown. That’s what we want. We want them to know that Catlettsburg is a great place to live and to grow up and just to be proud from where they’re from,” she said.

Caperton hopes the visit from the school will become a tradition. She believes it is important for the students to know that they not only have support from their home or school, but also from the town including the police officers and the business owners.

Michelle McCoy, a first grade teacher, said her students had been working on their ornaments for the past week. She is also an advocate for the students being involved in their community while also having a good time.

“They’re ecstatic, as you can tell,” she said as her class lined up at the gazebo downtown to meet with Santa Claus where he handed each student a candy cane.

The trees will also act as a backdrop for Catlettsburg’s third annual Christmas parade on Saturday at 4 p.m. The parade was recently revived in 2014 after a 20- year break.

Following the parade, Santa Claus will visit with treat bags at 26th Street and Chestnut.

A meet and greet with Catlettsburg police and fire departments, caboose and train tours, door prizes, a reception and Christmas caroling are also scheduled.
