BCMS student wins Ashland Breakfast Kiwanis Mother's Day Essay Contest

From The Daily Independent

Story by Lee Ward

Gratitude is evident in the writing of Adriana White, winner of the Ashland Breakfast Kiwanis’ annual Mother of the Year Essay Contest.

“There are many great mothers in the world, but I believe my mother should win the Mother of the Year because she saved  my life,” her essay began, explaining her mother, Terra Hampton, adopted her last year when her birth mother was not able to care for her.

“My adopted mom is very loving and also caring. If I need something, she is there. She would drop anything to spend time with me,” the essay continued.

White received gift cards to CineMark Movies 10 and Applebee’s restaurant; Hampton received a plaque.

The Boyd County Middle School student’s essay was chosen from among 86 entrants from her school as well as  Ashland, Fairview and Rose Hill Christian middle schools.

Keith Frazier, chairman of the essay committee, said 58 percent of submissions were from students living with their birth parents. He noted many students are living with aunts, great-aunts, grandparents, cousins and siblings and many mentioned violence, alcoholism, addiction and unemployment in their essays.

“It tells a lot about what’s going on in the world today,” he said.

As is tradition, Frazier read quotes from some of other essays. They were funny, touching and brutally honest:

“She deserves a thank you for putting up with me.”

“My mom doesn’t understand the things I want her to, but her trying to understand is good enough.”

“Throughout my life, my mother has continued to inspire me.”

“Not only do I say she is the best but very reliable sources could say that too.”

“It may be arguable that someone has a better mother than me, but they’re just jealous...”

“We have our differences, but honestly who doesn’t...”

“Yes, my mom sets rules that I don’t always obey...”

“...the best part is she supports my dreams.”
