Going back to school

SUMMIT - Another first day of school is in the books for students in the Boyd County School District.

Wednesday was the first day back to school, prompting anxious nerves for parents, excitement for children and lots of work for the school district’s employees.

“It’s gone very smoothly,” said Boyd County Superintendent Brock Walter as the school day neared its end.

Walter said he was looking forward to the first week back from summer vacation, which entails getting the students acclimated to their routine and to the learning process.

He said there were also some new faces as far as faculty, including three new elementary principals; Jeffery Frasure at Catlettsburg, Brian Eerenberg at Ponderosa and Sean Stewart at Summit.

In terms of enrollment, Walter said the numbers were still not certain since it was the first day. However, he said enrollment is probably a little down.

Greenup County schools will kick off their school year today. Superintendent Sherry Horsley said the whole year would be focused around a growth mindset.

“We’re all about working together as a team to see how far we can take our students this year,” she said.

She also touched on enrollment, saying it is down a little, which is normal for the area.

“We’re certainly hoping with the new company (Braidy Industries) we have coming in and we have a new one in Wurtland (Wright-Mix Material Solutions) that things will be on the rise,” said Horsley.

The following is a list of other local first day of school dates:

- Carter County Schools: Tuesday

- Ashland Independent Schools: Wednesday

- Russell Independent School: Wednesday

- Fairview Independent Schools: Wednesday

- Raceland-Worthington Independent Schools: Thursday
