PRESS RELEASE

HELP AN ASHLAND SCHOOL WIN NEW SPORTS FLOORING

Gerflor USA’s Play Safe on Taraflex Jury Selects Summit Elementary as a Finalist in its Sports Flooring Giveaway

ASHLAND, Ky. (November 2016) Summit Elementary in Ashland has been selected as one of three finalists to win a new sports floor for its gymnasium. For the past two months, Gerflor USA, a leader in resilient sports floor manufacturing, gathered nominations from the public for schools or community centers across the country to win a Taraflex floor through its Play Safe on Taraflex program.

The finalists, which also include Anderson Middle School in Anderson, Calif., and the Fairfield YMCA in Fairfield, Conn., were selected from more than 50 submissions and chosen by a jury of five respected professionals. The winner will receive a Taraflex floor, the world’s most widely specified sports surface due to its safety and performance properties, and the same flooring selected for 10 consecutive Olympic Games through Gerflor’s partnerships with IHF and FIVB.

To determine a winner, a public voting period is open through Nov. 23. The nominees were evaluated based on financial need, condition of the current playing surface and facility and the nomination statement. To vote for one of the finalists, visit Gerflor USA’s Facebook page.

“We are in dire need of a new gymnasium as our current floor is 18 years old and recent attempts to ‘refinish’ or ‘seal’ have not provided any solution and has actually made the problem worse over time,” said Ben Maynard, principal of Summit Elementary. “We cannot host basketball games because students fall while trying to start and stop. The Physical Education teacher must modify activities so the children are safe. A new Taraflex floor from Gerflor USA would allow us to provide a safe gymnasium for students to fully participate in P.E. classes, host more events for our students and families and provide a safe basketball experience for our kids.”

Because of its safety and performance benefits, Taraflex is a leader in indoor sports flooring for U.S. schools, installed in over 70,000 gymnasiums worldwide. The winning school or community center will receive the same TARAFLEX floor featured at the London Games, or an equivalent TARAFLEX Sport M Plus floor.

“It’s critical that kids have a safe surface to play on,” said Dr. Robert C. Klapper, Chief, Division of Orthopedic Surgery at Cedars Sinai Medical Group and jury member for Play Safe on Taraflex. “We evaluated each nomination on a number of criteria, but took safety into serious consideration as we see numerous injuries due to poor performing gymnasiums and facilities.”
