New softball field pondered

First of several athletic facilities set to be moved to the grounds of new high school

CANNONSBURG - Softball at Boyd County High School has often been a soggy business, played on a field so low in the flood plain it typically is under water two or three times a year.
That may change soon.
The Boyd County Board of Education is taking the first steps toward building a new softball field at a much higher elevation — on the plateau in front of the new high school, overlooking Ky. 180.
Architects are scheduled to present preliminary plans and cost estimates to the board at its Tuesday meeting.
A new softball field is one of several athletic facilities planned for moving to the grounds of the new school, which opened in 2013, on a hilltop campus across the highway from the old one.
Eventually almost all sports, with the possible exception of baseball, will move to the new campus, district finance director Don Fleu said.
Softball takes priority because the current field, tucked into a low corner of the campus between the football stadium and the highway, floods frequently, often two or more times per season.
The timing is right for rebuilding because the state School Facilities Construction Commission is offering the district partial funding, Fleu said.
The state money will enable the district to borrow about $1 million. If the district needs more than that it would probably have to take it out of its general operating fund because other projects have depleted its building fund, he said.
Much of the initial expense will be consumed in preparing the site, installing utilities and building a roadway, Fleu said.
