Town Center Mall to Raise Money for Schools 8/1 to 8/28

Ashland Town Center, Ashland's premier indoor shopping destination, will raise money for local schools through its annual Earning for Learning promotional program. Shoppers can help their schools earn points when they turn in receipts from purchases made at the mall Monday, August 1 through Sunday, August 28th, 2016.

Shoppers are encouraged to bring their day-of-purchase receipts to the Guest Services Center where they can decide which school will receive the points earned from their purchases. Each week, the school in first place will receive $600, second place, $300, and third place will be presented with $150.

Double points will be given to shoppers on Mondays and Tuesdays during the promotion. Additionally, purchases from select stores will be worth double points each week. Shoppers can find each week's double point stores posted at Guest Services on the Ashland Town Center website and on social media. Each receipt redeemed will provide a shopper with the chance to win a $25 Ashland Town Center gift card. One winner will be slected at random and awarded weekly.

School supporters can enjoy Ashland Town Center's mix of more than 70 popular stores including Belk, JC Penney, American Eagle Outfitters, Bath and Body Works, Carter's, Kay Jewlerlers and more.

An Interview with Twin Superintendents

On Tuesday, March 24th, students across the district were encouraged to dress like their future career choice. It was all a part of the week-long emphasis on College and Career Readiness.

One Cannonsburg Elementary student dressed as the district's 'number one' job - he dressed as Superintendent Brock Walter. Josh Kelley, son of preschool teacher Melanie Kelley, was interviewed by his mirror image in the video below:

Digital Learning Day

On March 13th, Boyd County Public Schools participated in the celebration of Digital Learning Day.  Digital Learning Day was started as a way to actively spread innovative practices and ensure that all youth have access to high-quality digital learning opportunities no matter where they live. This grassroots effort blossomed into a massive nationwide celebration as teachers realized that Digital Learning Day is not about technology, it’s about learning. Digital Learning Day promotes the effective use of modern day tools afforded to every other industry to improve the learning experience in K-12 public schools.

Digital learning is any instructional practice that effectively uses technology to strengthen a student’s learning experience. It emphasizes high-quality instruction and provides access to challenging content, feedback through formative assessment, opportunities for learning anytime and anywhere, and individualized instruction to ensure all students reach their full potential to succeed in college and a career.

Digital learning advances school reform by increasing equity and access to educational opportunities, improving effectiveness and productivity of teachers and administrators, providing student-centered learning to ensure college and career readiness for all students, and recognizing teachers as education designers.

Ponderosa Elementary to Participate in NAEP Testing

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as the Nation’s Report Card, is coming to Ponderosa Elementary on Thursday, March 5th!

This year, NAEP tests 4th- and 8th-grade students in reading, mathematics and science and compares each state’s performance with the rest of the nation.  The results are anonymous and students' grades won’t be affected if they participate.  Accommodations are also provided so that as many students as possible can participate.

While NAEP does not count for a grade, or as part of our state accountability model, NAEP is important and will be used as a yardstick to measure Kentucky’s performance as compared with the rest of the nation for years to come! Kentucky improvement will be critical for our state to maintain our progressive education reform agenda and for our students to continue to be among the top performers in the United States.

Students need to do their best, because they represent Kentucky and results are compared with other states.  We know that our schools work very hard and Kentucky students, as a whole, can continue to rank above the nation's average in reading, math, and science!  If you know a fourth grade student, who will be participating at Ponderosa Elementary, please encourage him or her to do their best on the test!

Should their be inclement weather, and Boyd County Public Schools are closed, the make-up date will be Tuesday, March 10th.

BCMS Summer Campers Have Fun with Oobleck

Oobleck is a suspension of cornstarch and water that can behave like a solid or a liquid depending on how much pressure you apply. Try to grab some in your hand and it will form a solid ball in your palm just until you release the pressure, then it will flow out between your fingers. Materials that behave this way are classified as non-Newtonian substances.

The Halloween Blast was a Blast!
The Halloween Blast, held at ECLC - South on October 20 was a huge success even though it was too wet to have the activities planned for outside. Everyone moved inside for the entertainment. Woody from Toy Story, Dorothy and the Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz, Princesses and Fairies, Raggedy Ann, clowns and animals showed up to enjoy the festivities.  There were cake walks, fishing games, face painting and balloon creations.  There was pizza, cookies and candy to enjoy along with cotton candy and snow cones.  The halls were alive with excitement as everyone seemed to enjoy the evening.  It was a great time to renew old friendships and spark up new ones.  Thanks to all the staff who helped to make it a memorable evening.  Especially thanks to Susan Kenser, Parent Involvement Specialist and the parents from our Kids' Boosters and Fatherhood Involvment programs who helped to organize this wonderful annual event .
The Cubbies have arrived!
The Federal Correctional Institution in Summit upon approval for a community service project and led by Shad Ford have constructed 12 cubbies, so far, for our preschool classrooms.  The are beautiful and much appreciated.  Ms. Cole's class was the first to get their cubbies.  Each child eagerly brought their backpack and coat to hang on the "hookers" that each section provided.

Shad Ford, Scott Butcher and others have communicated  with director, Ginger Clark throughout the summer months to arrange to construct two cubbies per class with 26 to be constructed in all.  At this point 12 have been completed.  So, to this point cubbies have been made for all of the ECLC - North preschool classrooms and the two at Catlettsburg Elementary.  ECLC - South will get the next delivery of 14 yet to be finished.

Thank you Shad,  Jason and Scott!
Wood Chips have arrived
Boyd County Preschool would like to express their sincere appreciation to the maintenance department of Boyd County Public Schools for the great loads of wood chips surfacing for our playgrounds.  Wood chips arrived at all locations, South, North and Catlettsburg this past week (Fall Break) and the Boyd County Detention Center under the direction of Jailer, Joe Burchett, will be spreading the wood chips after school hours.  Teachers and students are happy to see the addition of the wood chips to maintain our wonderful playgrounds.  Thank you Tim Black and the maintenance crew of Boyd County and thank you Joe Burchett and crew from the Boyd County Detention Center.  We appreciate you!
Preschool Program Review
The Kentucky Department of Education will be conducting preschool reviews throughout the state of Kentucky.  After two pilot years, KDE is ready to begin preschool program reviews with Boyd County Preschool slated to be reviewed this year in Cohort #1 of those in Kentucky to be reviewed by the state.  A report has already been sent to the state departmnet and Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale (ECERS) observations are to begin on all the classrooms internally at first and then in early 2012 the Ashland Regional Training Center will come to perform ECERS observatons on 50% of the classrooms.  Documents required by the state are to be uploaded for a desk review  as another part of the review with the final part to be a possible site visit by KDE reviewers.  Boyd County Preschool, a NAEYC and SACS accreditated program is confident that this additional review will be a possitive school improvement opportunity and looks forward to members of the state department of education coming to see the quality afforded the Boyd County community through their Boyd County Schools' preschool program.

Preschool fathers are important.
